Christmas is proving fruitful for the spa industry as, despite
continuing financial concerns, consumers are investing in their
“wellness” and booking in for spa treatments in the run-up to the
festive season.
Champneys Henlow is already fully booked until Christmas, while there
are just a few spaces left at Champneys Tring in Hertfordshire.
Champneys spokesperson Sharon Scott, said: “Consumers clearly consider
their own wellbeing and appearance more than luxury goods. We’ve seen a
definite increase as a result of the recession.”
Spa packages are proving to be particularly popular as consumers prepare
themselves for over-indulgence during Christmas. Moddershall Oaks Spa in
Staffordshire’s guest services manager Bianca Bradshaw, said: “We are
fully booked for day spa packages right up until Christmas Eve.
“A lot of people do come here to relax and use it as a bit of a holiday
because maybe they haven’t been away this year.”
So-called staycationers are also benefiting from the long lasting
refreshing results of treatments, according to Waterfall Spa in Leeds’
business co-ordinator Rachael Robinson. She added: “Since October our
client numbers have increased as clients come to shed the winter blues,
prepare themselves for Christmas parties and re-energise after shopping
in the busy town centre of Leeds.”
Relaxing seems to be high on the agenda with significant massage
treatment bookings. Director of City Retreat in Newcastle Lesley Caster,
confirmed: “There are a lot of stressed people out there right now, so
we have noticed that massage is a popular treatment – after Brazilians
and bikini waxing it’s our number one.”

Women are forsaking alcohol to maintain their appearance, results of a
recent survey have revealed. According to a poll carried out by research
organisation YouGov, 73% of women between the ages of 25 and 34 claim to drink
less than the recommended limit of 14 units. Meanwhile, 75% of 35- to
44-year-olds and, more surprisingly, 18- to 24-year-olds have made the same
claim.
Being “constantly aware” of their appearance and behaviour were the
reasons cited by 75% for backing away from the bottle. Not only is this a good
decision, as far as swerving beer goggles is concerned, but it will help skin
to avoid bearing the aesthetic brunt of continuous nights on the tiles.
Nina Goad, a spokesperson for the British Association of Dermatologists,
said: “One of the effects of alcohol is to dilate the small blood vessels in
the skin, which can make the skin appear redder, giving that ‘flushed’ look
that is often associated with drinking. People who are already prone to
blushing and facial flushing may notice that this worsens after drinking
alcohol, even if they are not regular drinkers. Repeated reddening in this
manner can also lead to thread veins. Likewise, alcohol also causes the tiny
blood vessels on the surface of the eye to widen, making them more visible and
resulting in bloodshot eyes.
“Alcohol is a diuretic, which means that it dehydrates the body by causing
the kidneys to get rid of excess fluid in the form of urine. This dehydrates
your body generally, including the skin, which is your body’s largest organ.
This happens every time you drink alcohol. Alcohol is also thought to deprive
the skin of certain vital vitamins and nutrients.”

Artdeco had a launch event
at the Garden Perfumery with cocktails and cupcakes being served
throughout the evening.
The launch event was hosted by our very own UK brand ambassador
Tara- Palmer Tomkinson.
Specially invited guests had the opportunity to try out the

also invited and were given a one-to-one make over by Artdeco's trained make up artists.
